Zora Hurston and the Chinaberry Tree
Black History Month
The Columbus Public Library and Family Theatre are teaming up for a worldwide premier of this play on the early life of Zora Neal Hurston (January 7, 1891-January 28, 1960). Zora was an American folklorist and author during the time of the Harlem Renaissance. Of Hurston’s four novels and more than 50 published short stories, plays and essays, she is best known for her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Cheryl Marynell (Palmour), a director at Family Theatre and an adjunct professor at Chattahoochee Valley State University, adapted the play from the children’s book of the same title by William Miller.

A Valentine Special
A Note from the Artistic Director
Neil Stephens informed us late Friday afternoon that he would be unable to do the show because of health reasons. I had a decision to make. Over 50 people had made reservations for the show, and it was Valentine’s Day weekend! Many of the men had called and set up this time as a special treat for their wives! I did not want to disappoint them or any of our other patrons at this late date. I made a decision. I called two women whom I believe possess incredible musical talent and asked them to fill in. I also called and ask Carol Lamb to play for Theresa. They all three agreed and sacrificed their Saturday to make tonight possible. If you are disappointed in any way, you are welcome to a full refund or free tickets for a future show. See me or call me later. Meanwhile, enjoy. I do not think you will be disappointed. As for me, I am incredibly proud. Happy Valentine’s Day!

The Hundred Dresses is a 1944 children's book by Eleanor Estes, illustrated by Louis Slobodkin. The book is about Wanda Petronski, a poor and friendless Polish-American girl. Her teacher, outwardly kind, puts her in the worst seat in the schoolroom and does not intervene when her schoolmates tease her mercilessly. One day, after her classmates laugh and tease her over the faded blue dress she wears to school every day, Wanda claims to own one hundred dresses. The story follows these students as they learn a lesson about their moral values when faced with prejudice.

Ramona has one big problem at school, Yard Ape. His real name is Danny and he's in Mrs. Whaley's class, just like Ramona. One time Ramona gets egg in her hair, yoke and all, and goes to the office to wash it out. She hears her teacher say "nuisance" and she thinks that Mrs. Whaley is talking about her! Ramona does a book report in front of the class and forgets what to say at the end, so she says,"... I can't believe I read the whole thing!"

Our Town is a three act play by Thornton Wilder which is, perhaps, the most frequently produced play by an American playwright. The play is set in the fictional community of Grover's Corners, modeled after several New Hampshire towns in the Mount Monadnock region: Jaffrey, Peterborough, Dublin, and others. Using meta-theatrical devices, the play is set in a 1930's theater. Through the actions of the Stage Manager the town of Grover's Corners is created for the audience and scenes from its history between the years of 1901 and 1913 play out.
Performances will be held March 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, & 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Young Mary Call Luther has spunk, guts, spirit—call it what you will—and she needs them if she's to keep her family together after the death of her father. To do this, she has to hide her father's death from the county welfare, from Kiser Pease, their landlord, and from the townspeople. Kiser wants to marry Devola, Mary Call's older sister, a dreamy, quiet, deceptively retiring girl. Keeping Kiser Pease and the townsfolk at bay lets everyone in for some hilarious tricks and ruses that keep the play moving with action and suspense.
